Super Ethical Reality Tournaments at CAX (fun tourneys)
I decided the video gamers shouldn’t have all the fun. I’ll be running two fun tourneys at CAX. If you remember the Panic Park tournaments last year, it’s in the same spirit.
Both are free. All entrants will get discount coupons to PPM and probably Playland. Other prizes as I can gather them this week. If you have a prize to donate, drop it off with me at CAX!
The first tournament is an idea people spoke of from the Wild West Pinball Show: Tag team pinball! Today at PPM warehouse, Mike hooked up a light and bell to Sky Jump. Player 1 starts on the game. Player 2 stands back behind a line away from the game. When the bell rings, the players must quickly switch!
The second tournament is The Gloves Come On! Players are fitted with a set of Boxing Gloves and try to put up their best score.
Both tourneys are single elim. Sign-ups will be posted and I’ll run them as possible through the show.
Sweden invades Vitus!
(Note: no tournament on 7/31. Next tournament 8/14)
Tuesday was busy at Vitus since world pinball ranking points, cash and $100 worth of California Extreme tournament entries were up for grabs. 31 players had to go through the double-elimination meat grinder in just five hours and the pace was relentless. Big thanks to David Lee, Damien Charletty, Jim Vierra, Josh Warren, Aaron Wong, and others for help timing the rounds.
The format is two players assigned to two games. The timer is started and they get three minutes on each game to put up whatever score they can. Extra balls, Restarts, and even Continues are all fair game, but when three minutes is up whatever it says on the scoreboard is what you’re left with.

Patrik Bodin vs. Andrei Massenkoff
Patrik Bodin of Sweden is currently ranked 24th in the world rankings and happened to be in town. Players asked Patrik what pinball in Sweden is like, as well as how to repair their Volvos and if he was friends with the dragon tatoo girl. He was a nice guy but I was secretly disappointed he didn’t bring any Swedish meatballs.
Patrik defeated Andrei and then lost to Hal in the winner’s bracket.
Andrei took down Eugene for a second shot at Patrik and a chance to win the loser’s bracket, but Patrik prevailed and moved on to the final match against Hal. Patrik had to win twice against Hal to win the tournament and the action was more frenetic than a Christmas Sale at IKEA. Patrik won the two matches to take home the win. Congrats!

2nd: $30

4th: $10
Cash Payouts:
5th – 8th: $5
1st: 40% (of remaining pot)
2nd: 30%
3rd: 20%
4th: 10%
Format is double-elim time attack, 3 minute rounds. However, unlike last time,
there will be no tie-breaker games due to time constraints. In regular play,
the winner in a tie will be decided by which player’s winning score percentage
is higher.
For example:
If Mads Kristensen and I played MM and SS:
Mads wins MM 20M to 15M (25%)
I win SS 8M to 7M (12.5%)
Mads wins the match since his winning game score percentage on MM is higher than
my winning score percentage on SS.
If time allows, tie breaker games will be done in the later rounds for top 4 or
8.
P.O.P. – Pinball Outreach Project will make its official introduction to the pinball community at California Extreme (http://www.caextreme.org/) in Santa Clara, CA July 28-29, 2012, using a Transformers LE with a remote flipper modification “box”. This adapted pinball machine has flippers on top and sides of the box so they can be controlled from a wheelchair, or even a hospital bed (with a monitor hookup).
